Table tennis, most commonly known as ping pong, is a big thing in on our campus. At almost any time of the day you can walk into the fitness center and see people gathered around the big green table hitting a ball back and forth with a wooden paddle. The students at Penn State Lehigh Valley don’t just play the traditional game though, they play ping pong games with creative spins on them that get everybody involved so that there’s not a big crowd watching two people play. For example, one game is four squares. In this game, there’s one player on each square of the table and the squares are labeled King, Queen, Jack, and Ace. The king always serves and you have to protect your square. If the ball hits it, you have to hit it in someone else’s. If the ball hits twice in their square, they miss the ball, or the ball hits their body and hits the ground, then they’re out and a new player comes in. The game can get really intense which really gets you into it.

“It’s a fun thing to do and a great way to bond with other students on the campus,” said Ethan Freiss.

Jared Serafin agrees. He said it’s more than just a fun sport that helps you work on your hand-eye coordination.

“It builds bonds between other students and lets you meet other people that you wouldn’t usually meet or talk to,” said Serafin.

“It’s a pretty cool sport to play,” said Brian Nguyen. “I was pretty bad at first and now I’m good, I’m planning on going pro now”.

Bobby Shoemaker, who is on the campus soccer team, also finds time to play this sport.

“It’s alright until coach comes and gets upset when we hit the paddle on the table,” said Shoemaker.

Not everyone’s a pro, but that doesn’t stop them from enjoying the game.

“I suck, but it’s fun and I like the spin the ball does because ball is so light,” said Elijah Silfies.
